Lori Nelson (Rob Nelson's wife) and Danielle Hatfield came forward to tell us about the Carlton Wellness Center in Carlton. Danielle, coordinator of Volunteer Services of Carlton County, explained how they received a grant of $500,000 to create a Carlton Wellness Center as part of the Volunteer Services of Carlton County.

Volunteer services of CC used to be located in Cloquet near Wal-Mart, but now is in Carlton across the street from the VFW. In their new location the Carlton Wellness Center offers fitness and nutrition programs, where Lori is in charge. Lori is the first person you see when you walk into the wellness center. She walks you through all that they have to offer. Membership costs $60 per year, with discounts for seniors and military. Lori described some of the equipment in the center: 6 cardio machines, 2 elliptical machines, treadmills with TVs, weightlifting, kettle bells, and 4 virtual biking machines, where you can have a ghost biker, race with other bikers, or play games on bikes. Classes include yoga, zumba, kick boxing and more. The center is open M-F 5am to 8pm, Sat and Sun 6am to 12pm. They haven't had their official grand opening yet, so hours may change. So far, mostly retired or close to retiring age people come from Hermantown, Moose Lake, and Esko as well as closer to Carlton. A personal trainer and senior meals on Mondays are also part of the grant. Fifty to 60 people can be served at the restaurant formerly called Cozy Cafe with a speaker provided. Help get the word out about this exciting new addition to our community!
